It is important for organic chemistry students to understand this material so that they can better understand the types of organic compounds. Some of these compounds are often referred to as simple and complex molecules. The term simple molecule is used because these chemicals are usually one unit long. Complex molecules have the number of molecules that is more than one unit long. There are some types of carbon compounds that are referred to as monoterpenes or terpenes, and these are an important group of chemical compounds. Monoterpenes are used as ingredients in fragrances and aromatherapy products and other organic ingredients. The main advantage of using these compounds is that they are easily made from plant-based materials. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are also known as the most important determinant of the concentration of specific compounds in air. Some VOCs are volatile and they can evaporate easily. Others are not volatile and they cannot evaporate easily. VOCs can be found in different sources, like fuel, pesticides, dyes, cosmetics, paint, and certain substances that have been formulated. VOCs are what people refer to as organic pollutants. Ammonia is another important source of VOCs. This can be easily found in paints, household cleaners, and some types of cleaners. If ammonia is left undisturbed, it decomposes and forms nitrates. Nitrates in turn can be converted into nitrites and then into peroxides. Peroxides are another group of compounds that can convert into hydrogen peroxide. This is a powerful oxidizing agent that can react with oxygen in air to form ozone, which is harmful to human health. Some chemical reactions are highly toxic and one of them is the oxidation of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). Because of the reaction, these compounds may become toxic and will cause a host of problems to people who breathe them in. These reactions are also responsible for the creation of fluorine and chlorine gases. Most organic chemistry paper topics begin with a discussion of oxygen and its relationship to a compound. Then, a material will be covered that will explain how oxygen interacts with compounds and how it is used to create organic compounds. Then, the topic will be covered about the properties of certain compounds and how they can be detected.
